Give This Upper Body Resistance Band Workout A Try

Okay, so I’ve lost track of how many days I’ve been in quarantine, but for some reason I know that it was 8pm on March 16th, 2020 that every gym in the tri-state area shut down indefinitely.

This threw me for such a loop initially, because the gym is what I do…it is part of my daily routine, to some extent a small component of my identity. My routine was absolutely flipped upside down, so I needed to adapt. I am fortunate enough to have access to some home workout equipment, so I have been adapting the best I can. For those of you that do not have dumbbells and weights, I highly recommend getting your hands on some Resistance Bands on Amazon.

Bands will come in a variety of types: Resistance Bands with handles, Infinity Bands, and smaller loop resistance bands. All three serve their purpose, and all come in a variety of colors that correspond to their level of resistance. Bands can also be made more challenging by increasing your distance from the anchored point, or decreasing the length of the band, by moving your hands, and creating more tension.

During this workout, you will be completing two separate circuits. Complete each circuit before moving on to the next one. You can do each circuit once, or you can add rounds to make the workout longer and more challenging. I completed 4 rounds of each circuit, and aimed to complete 20 repetitions for each exercise. If you pay attention, for some exercises I have two bands, which is another way to increase the difficulty and the resistance in your workout.

The Red and Yellow Band Combined Helps Increase Resistance

During the workout, don’t worry if the weight feels light at first- Focus on proper form, hold the contraction for an extended period of time, and control the movement as you return to the starting position. In scientific terms, this is controlling the weight through the concentric, isometric, and eccentric phases of the lift.

Enjoy the workout and please reach out if you have any questions, comments, suggestions, or requests for future workouts. And don’t forget to follow @fitkidstraining here and on Instagram!

    • I’ve been pleasantly surprised by how effective resistance bands can be! I thought I would be sacrificing size and strength without the gym, but instead, I’m looking forward to mixing them in more even after returning to the weight room!
